Even the most compatible couple will reap benefits from couples’ counselling. Although it’s normal for all couples to go through ups and downs, confronting and discussing your issues as a couple is often a tough task, and sometimes you may feel anxious, reluctant, and uncomfortable with discussing these problems. Couples counselling allows couples to work with an experienced counsellor to engage in conflict resolution and strengthen their relationship.
What is Couples Counselling & Psychotherapy?
Couples counselling can provide lasting benefits to your relationship. Our couples’ counsellors and therapists will help you identify and tackle the root causes that are impacting your relationship. At MIND + ZEST, we provide a safe and neutral environment for both parties, allowing you to navigate through the issues in a constructive way. Our counsellors and therapists will provide a third point of view to help you see the situation from a different angle. Rather than deciding which individual is 'right' or 'wrong', a therapist is invested in the health of your relationship. Couples therapy is solution-focused and aims to help clients obtain better understanding of their partner’s emotions, feelings, and ideas, to solve persisting issues in the relationship.
How does Couples Counselling at Mind + Zest work?
Couples Counselling at Mind + Zest begins with a complimentary 15-minute intake session with one of our experienced intake specialists.
During the intake session, the intake specialist will ask questions to understand the nature of the problem and the treatment approach necessary to ensure that you will achieve your respective goals. The questions also serve to gain a better sense of your personalities because at Mind + Zest, we believe that it’s incredibly important that your counselor be the ‘perfect fit' for you. The intake session is also a wonderful opportunity for you to address any questions and concerns you may have.
By the end of your intake session, your intake specialist will set you up with a personalized ‘plan of action’ – which includes the recommended couples’ counselor who is best suited to fit your needs and the expected duration of therapy (if applicable).
Research has demonstrated that one of the most important predictors of obtaining success in therapy and counselling is the relationship between you and your therapist. At Mind + Zest, we take this research to heart. Our counselors will collaborate with you to develop a therapeutic plan that is tailored to your strengths, goals, and desired areas of change. Typically, most clients will have a sense of when their counselling goals have been reached. This sense of success typically emerges when you have overcome significant issues in your life and notice new feelings and changes in your behaviours. You may notice an increase in energy, mood, enthusiasm, motivation, general well-being, and interest, and you will gain the confidence to tackle new challenges on your own.
Successful counselling also depends on sustaining contact and momentum with your counselor. By regularly attending sessions, progression and healing is attained more quickly than when sessions are spread far apart or occur irregularly. Most of our clients find weekly sessions the most productive, while some individuals find bi-weekly or twice-a-week sessions as most effective.
