Addictions encompass much more than just the topic of fixation. They are a complex set of emotional issues that can be influenced by our families, upbringing, relationships, schooling, careers, and friendships. Addictions include alcohol, smoking, drugs, sex and gambling.
What is Addiction Psychotherapy and Counselling?
Psychotherapy and counselling can go a long way in providing you or a loved one lasting change when dealing with an addiction. Our addiction counselors at Mind + Zest help find the root of the issues that cause addiction, which can include complex emotions, workplace stressors, familial struggles, or social environments.
Addiction therapists have the tools to develop personalized treatment plans that focus on empowering you to get a hold of and break free from toxic behaviors. We aim not only to talk through your issues, but to develop a plan to change your dysfunctional or irrational behaviors and replace them with healthier living patterns.
Depending on the severity of the issues, you may need to see our supervising psychologist, so that they can diagnose, treat and monitor potential mental illness issues. Our addiction therapists can also refer you to a rehab facility if you need a residential stay.
How does addiction Therapy at Mind + Zest work?
We begin with a 15-minute intake session with one of our dedicated intake counsellors.
During this session, we will ask you crucial questions to understand the severity of the issues and gauge the treatment approach that will work best:
What does your day look like, and how does addiction factor in?
How does your addiction affect your family, career and relationships?
How do you cope with stress?
What aspects of your life do you think are contributing to your addiction?
We also try to get a good sense of your personality. At Mind + Zest, we want to match you with the therapist that would make the best possible fit based on what you need, and who you are. This consultation is also a great opportunity to address any concerns or questions you may have.
Lastly, we provide you with a personalized ‘plan of action’ that includes a recommended addiction therapist who is best suited to handle your needs, a recommended duration of therapy, and a suggestion for any further testing or psychological service they feel would best help you.
*Severe cases of addiction can be extremely difficult to treat, and many times, patients see the best results when working with a group of health specialists. If you feel a team of professionals would be in your best interest, we can refer you to an inpatient or outpatient facility that can provide that medical support.
